Instagram’s new Twitter competitor app “Threads” is slated to be rolled out on Thursday in the US and on Friday for the rest of the world, according to a listing spotted on Apple’s App Store. The Twitter alternative app from Instagram’s parent company Meta briefly showed up on Google Play on Saturday and was spotted by mobile developer Alessandro Paluzzi, who flagged some of its features on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform. Screenshots and some initial details revealed some of the app’s UI elements, including its login screen, which suggested an ability to log into the app with one’s Instagram account. The interface, as seen on the screenshots, also appears similar to other text-based social media apps. “Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow,” said the app’s App Store preview notes. “Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things – or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.” Meta has also launched a new webpage with a countdown ahead of Threads’ release. The tech giant has been working on the app for some time now, initially under the name “Barcelona”. The Threads app was being planned for an end-of-July release, but its launch is being sped up following Twitter users expressing frustration over Mr Musk’s “rate limiting” fiasco, 9to5Mac reported. Chaos erupted on Twitter on Saturday as the company’s owner and chief technology officer Mr Musk announced new limits on the number of posts accounts can read in a day. The Tesla boss said the decision was made to “address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation”. He had previously expressed displeasure with artificial intelligence firms like ChatGPT-owner OpenAI using Twitter’s data to train their AI models. Many users expressed their frustration over the weekend as they got notifications saying, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again”. The growing frustration among Twitter’s users has also led to a new surge of activity on rival social networks like Mastodon and Bluesky. Threads’ rollout in this atmosphere of backlash against Twitter’s moves might see the new app get more takers. The Twitter competitor also appears to directly port over users’ Instagram followers and following lists, instead of rebuilding their communities from scratch. Apple has announced its new major update for the iPhone – but not for every iPhone. The new release, iOS 17, brings new Messaging features as well as whole new ways of using the iPhone, in the form of a new feature called StandBy. It was announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in California this week, as part of a live-streamed event that also saw the reveal of a new virtual reality headset. Apple announced an early version of the software shortly after that event, but only to developers. Those registered developers can download it now. The company will then release a public beta, for which anyone can sign up and download the software, in July. It did not give a more precise date for the release. Apple will then release the update to the public in the autumn, it said. Each year’s iOS update usually arrives just before the introduction of the new iPhone, in September. Apple will release the updates for MacOS, WatchOS and iPadOS on a similar schedule. Sometimes, however, the launch of the new iPad and Mac update is held until later in the year, in October. The new update will be available on all iPhone devices that can run the current iOS 16 – with the exception of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Those devices were introduced in 2017. Apple has said that it keeps new updates coming to older devices for as long as possible, but that new features sometimes mean it has to drop them from new updates. MacOS will drop support for 2017 iMacs and MacBook Pros, with the exception of that year’s iMac Pro. E-commerce giant Amazon has said it uses artificial intelligence systems to prevent fake reviews on the platform that can intentionally mislead customers. While the company already uses machine learning models to detect risks such as links to other accounts, sign-in activity, review history, and other indications of unusual behavior that point to fake reviews, the tech giant said on Tuesday that is further investing in sophisticated fraud-detection tools. Using several such methods, the company said it “proactively blocked over 200 million suspected fake reviews” from its stores in 2022. “We will continue to build sophisticated tools that protect customers, our selling partners, and our store from bad actors that attempt to profit by proliferating fake reviews globally,” Amazon said. In the new statement, the e-commerce giant warned of the emergence of an illicit industry of “fake review brokers,” who approach consumers via social media channels, and messaging services, soliciting them to write fake reviews in exchange for money or other incentives. These brokers, according to Amazon, portray themselves as legitimate businesses with networks of hundreds of employees stationed worldwide. So far, it has taken legal action against over 90 such bad actors around the world who facilitated fake reviews and sued more than 10,000 Facebook group administrators who attempted to put fake reviews. It also reported over 23,000 abusive social media groups, with over 46 million members and followers, that facilitated fake reviews in 2022, the company added. These high-volume fake review brokers a “global problem” impacting multiple industries, according to Amazon, which called on the private sector, consumer groups, and governments to work together to stop fake review brokers. “Through cross-industry sharing – including information on bad actors’ tactics and techniques, who they are targeting, the services they provide, and how they operate – we can more effectively shut down these schemes, thereby protecting more consumers across different industries,” the company said. In countries that already have laws against soliciting fake reviews, it said regulators could do more to use their authority to take action against fake review brokers. “We also support greater funding for law enforcement to build further technical expertise to investigate and take down these brokers,” the multibillion-dollar conglomerate said. “Amazon will continue to protect our stores from fake reviews by investing in proactive tools to detect and stop fake reviews from impacting a customer’s buying decision,” it added.
