Breach at Chipmaker NXP Exposes Customer Information

Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors is notifying customers about a data breach that may have exposed their personal information.

The news was first noted by Troy Hunt, who runs Have I Been Pwned; he tweeted a copy of the email sent by NXP to affected customers.

In a statement, NXP said that "on July 14, 2023, we discovered that an unauthorized party acquired certain basic personal data such as email addresses and phone numbers from a system connected to our online portal, NXP.com."

After an internal investigation, NXP says it "found no evidence to suggest any data has been fraudulently used," but it's "contacting all affected NXP.com users out of an abundance of caution to ensure they are aware and extend our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause."

NXP declined to say how many people are affected by the breach, but outlined the types of personal data that may potentially have been stolen:

  • First and last name

  • Email address

  • Address, postcode, city and country

  • Business phone number

  • Mobile phone number

  • Company name

  • Job description and business title

  • Communication preferences

As is standard procedure when this happens, NXP has urged its users to watch out for phishing emails that request personal information or contain suspicious links.
