Magic Arena players got a little treat this week, as March of the Machine: The Aftermath released a few days earlier than expected on the platform. While the set only has 50 cards, a few have caught players' eyes, namely Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin, which combos with another card to instantly defeat opponents. Here's how it works.
March of the Machine: The Aftermath is a standard-legal mini-set with a unique focus on narrative. March of the Machine presented the explosive climax of the New Phyrexia storyline, following the villainous praetors led by Elesh Norn in their quest for interplanar conquest, but there are still some loose ends to tie up, story-wise. New Phyrexia is defeated, but at what cost?
MTG Ob Nixilis Captive Kingpin Combo Explained
As it turns out, Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin makes for a potent combination with All Will Be One, from the February set of the same name. This red Enchantment card does damage to opponents and their permanents when you place counters on permanents or players - Ob Nixilis puts counters on himself when opponents are damaged.
In effect, as soon as you put a counter on anything, if both All Will Be One and Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin are on the battlefield, they will continually trigger each other's abilities as long as Ob Nixilis is not removed from the board during this process. This combo is potent because it only requires two cards (though potentially a third to start the combo) and exists in two colors -- the two most powerful colors in Standard right now.
