Apple launches Vision Pro, a VR headset it hopes will be most important product since iPhone
Apple has announced the ‘Vision Pro’, a headset it hopes will be its most important product since the iPhone. The new virtual reality tool will allow people to see apps projected on top of the room around them, allowing apps to be “freed from the confines of a display”, Apple said. Users will be able to sit in their living room and see their apps – messages, phone calls, web browsing and more – projected on top of their coffee table, for instance. As such, it is the first Apple product “you look through, not at”, said Tim Cook as he introduced it during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Other apps, such as games, will take over the full view, Apple said. But even then the goggles had been made to ensure that users were never cut off from the world around them. :: Follow The Independent’s live coverage of Apple’s event here That includes a feature that means that if someone comes into the room, the headset will spot them and superimpose them. But the headset also has a feature called “EyeSight” – a display on the outside of the goggles, which shows people’s eyes, and gives an indication of what they are doing inside the headset. Elon Musk’s X Corp sued by another social network company named X
Elon Musk’s X Corp, the company formerly known as Twitter, is being sued by another social network also named X, a lawsuit filed in a federal court revealed. The lawsuit, filed by a Florida-based ad agency X Social Media LLC, alleged that the popular social media platform violates Florida common law because of “unfair competition and trademark and service mark infringement”. It also accused the company owned by Mr Musk of violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (FDUPTA). The accusing company said it has existed in the American state with its registered trademark as “X SOCIALMEDIA” continuously since 2016. It said it has existed as “a vanguard in utilizing social media and marketing technology to connect consumers with legal services in situations where those harmed would otherwise remain voiceless and without remedy”. The Florida-based company, founded in 2015 by entrepreneur Jacob Malherbe, said its “distinctive” and “dominant” letter “X” is used to signify the beginning of a life-changing journey towards justice. The ad firm said its ”X” mark is successfully associated with its social media advertising services, adding that it has invested “over $2m to date” in building brand awareness and reaching consumers. It argued that it has “already suffered loss in revenue that correlates with X Corp’s rebrand and use of the mark ‘X’.” “In addition to the symbolic emphasis of the ‘X’, X Social Media frequently emphasizes the ‘X’ portion of its mark throughout its advertising, blogs, and newsletters highlighting its work,” the company said. “X Corp’s use of the ‘X’ mark and recent attempt to register the mark in association with social media, business data, promotion and advertising, business consulting, market research services, and advertising services necessitates this action because its conduct has caused and will continue to cause serious irreparable harm to X Social Media,” the ad agency says. It remains to be seen how X Corp would respond to the lawsuit. X Corp did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment. Twitter finally adds secure messaging to DMs – but Elon Musk tells people not to ‘trust it’
Twitter says it has launched new, more secure messages – but even chief executive Elon Musk has warned users not to “trust it”. The social network has long been working on encrypted messages, which ensure that messages cannot be intercepted while they are being delivered. That is already possible on most other major messaging platforms, such as WhatsApp and iMessage. Now Twitter has released what it says is the first step towards integrating that security technology into its own product. But it says that it is not fully safe, and that users should not rely on it to keep messages secure. “Early version of encrypted direct messages just launched,” Mr Musk wrote on Twitter. “Try it, but don’t trust it yet.” On its support pages, Twitter’s aim is that “if someone puts a gun to our heads, we still can’t access your messages”. But it says it is “not quite there yet” and still “working on it”. That suggests that the messages are not end-to-end encrypted. While messages are secured from some attackers, anyone at Twitter or with access to its servers may still be able to access them. What’s more, Twitter’s implementation comes with a host of other limitations. It is only available when both of the users are verified and pay for Twitter’s $8 a month service, and users must turn it on rather than it being enabled by default. The messages also cannot be sent to groups, include pictures or other attachments, cannot be joined by new devices, are only supported on a limited number of devices per account and do not have proper protection against certain cyber attacks. When those various conditions are satisfied, users will be informed they are having an encrypted conversation by a message that appears within the chat. The other user’s profile picture will also show a lock icon over it. Twitter said that it would be updating the feature to remove some of those limitations, and would provide more information about the technology underpinning it in releases later this year.
