Facebook has stopped working, with users complaining they are unable to post. Many feared that they had been banned from using the site. But the problems appear to be related to technical issues. Other platforms owned by parent company Meta – such as WhatsApp and Instagram – appeared to be functioning as usual. Meta has recently been working to integrate the infrastructure of its different social networks, which seemingly means that they occasionally go offline at the same time. Some parts of Facebook also appeared to be working as normal, at least for some users. Facebook users complained particularly that posting appeared to be broken, even as other parts of the site worked. That led many to fear that they had been blocked from posting on the site because of some unknown infringement of the rules. A rare six-foot “earthquake fish” dubbed a “harbinger of doom” has been spotted, sparking doomsday theories. A group of divers have come across an enormous deep-sea creature with chunks bitten out of its body. The Russell's oarfish, regarded by some as a sign of forthcoming bad news, had several round bite marks believed to have been caused by a cookiecutter shark. It was spotted near the ocean surface and divers believe the large fish was about to die. Wang took images of the oarfish off the coast of Ruifang, in Taiwan. He said it was the first time he had ever encountered one in all his years of scuba diving. The injured Russell's oarfish appeared to be about two metres in length. Due to their size and shape, oarfish resemble ‘sea serpents’ and are considered harbingers of earthquakes and misfortune in Japanese mythology. The myth was rekindled in 2011 after the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Shortly before the disaster, at least a dozen of the rarely seen fish washed ashore in Japan in late 2009 and 2010. Despite their links to natural disasters, the Ecuadoran Geophysical Institute said the myth has no validity in any scientific study carried out as of August 2022. Oarfish are considered one of the longest fish in the ocean and can measure up to 17 metres (56 ft) in length and weigh over 200 kgs (441 lbs). Their body is scaleless and the skin has a slimy, silvery protective coating known as guanine. Their dorsal fin starts between its eyes and reaches its tail. Due to its ability to adapt to different temperatures, oarfish are found in most of the world's oceans with the exception of the poles. They live at depths of up to 1,000 metres (3,280 feet) and sightings are not very common. Sometimes they wash up on beaches after a storm or when they suffer a serious injury. Meta has added new edit features and voice notes to Instagram Threads, as it continues to try and take over from Twitter. “Rolling out Edit and Voice Threads today. Enjoy!” wrote Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on the site. They are yet more changes as Meta looks to keep the momentum from the launch of Threads, during which it became the fastest growing app in the world but has struggled to keep users reading and posting. As with when Threads first launched, the new features come amid loud questions over the future of X since Elon Musk took over and changed its name from Twitter. Twitter had previously taken years to add an edit button, and put it behind its Twitter Blue paid-for subscription tier. Some of its delay was thought to be a result of concerns about how to add the feature without contributing to disinformation. Some had expressed concern that the button could be used to edit popular posts to change their wording, or suggest that information had been available at different times, for instance. Twitter addressed that problem by adding a clear marker when a post had been edited, and allowing users to see the history of those edits. Threads does not offer an edit history, and is not thought to be adding one. But it did add a tiny icon making clear that the post has been revised. Threads has also added what it called “Voice Threads”, which function as small audio posts. Users can press a record button and that will then make a playable audio file, which will also include captions. The two new features are the latest changes from Meta to Instagram Threads, which was launched in an early version and has been updated rapidly ever since.
