Apple ‘is planning surprise Mac announcement soon’
Apple could be about to launch a host of new MacBooks. The company is planning a major event next week at which it will update at least some of its Macs, according to a new report. The most likely new computer is an update to the 24-inch iMac, which was first released in April 2021 and has not been updated since. But Apple could also be planning new versions of the MacBook Pro. Apple is preparing for a Mac-related launch event that could happen on either Monday, 30 October or the following day, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. He cited sources with knowledge of Apple’s plans, but also noted that stock for Apple’s existing Macs is running low. That 24-inch iMac as well as the 13-, 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro all show long waits for delivery in both the online and physical Apple stores, he noted. That can suggest that an update is incoming, as Apple clears out old units before the new ones arrive. The last time that Apple held its results in November came in 2018, when Apple released new iPads and Macs in late October. Apple will also be holding its quarterly results in November this year, Mr Gurman noted. The new reports do not indicate what changes Apple might be planning for the new computers. But the 24-inch iMac has now gone almost three years without an update, and is still using Apple’s old M1 chip, making it the only computer in Apple’s line-up to do so. A new 24-inch iMac would presumably update that processor while presumably making other changes. It is less clear how Apple would update its 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, which are the very top of its professional line-up. Those received upgrades to Apple’s top-of-the-line M2 processor family in January. Mr Gurman suggested that the computers could also get “minor improvements to displays”. Previous reports have suggested that Apple could be adding more efficient screens to those premium laptops. TikTok ban in numbers: Charting the controversial rise of the world’s most popular app
Less than six years after launching in the US, TikTok is now facing a reckoning. After amassing more than 150 million users in the country, lawmakers are now making moves to roll out a complete ban. The biggest ever Chinese tech success in the US is accused of mishandling user data and holding too much influence over Americans, with Montana becoming the first state to sign a bill into law to make it illegal for TikTok to operate there from January 2024. Fears around national security have been countered with questions about censorship, with the Electronic Frontier Foundation describing the prospect of a ban as a “seed of genuine security concern wrapped in a thick layer of censorship”. The US digital liberties group has called on people to “resist a governmental power to ban a popular means of communication and expression”, while the FBI claims Chinese state ties to parent company ByteDance could allow the app to “manipulate content” in order to spread harmful propaganda. The US is not the first major market to consider a total ban of the social media platform, with India issuing a complete TikTok ban in 2020. Other countries and areas, including the EU, have put partial bans in place. Various federal and state TikTok bans are already in place in the US, banning government workers and military personnel from using the app on official devices. This has done little to stem its growth in the US, with TikTok proving to be the most popular app both in America and globally last year with 672 million total downloads. This has helped bring the total number of TikTok users around the world to above 1.5 billion, with only India’s ban nearly three years ago slightly slowing its growth – but only temporarily. Despite the warnings surrounding TikTok, the app is viewed positively by the majority of young users, which may cause the Biden administration to hesitate on ordering an outright ban given younger demographics typically skew towards voting Democrat. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew defended the app and its intentions when he appeared before Congress earlier this year. The former Facebook intern downplayed ties to the Chinese government while trying to convince members of Congress that the app is safe for US users and poses no threat to national security. After Montana signed a TikTok ban into law on 17 May, 2023, a TikTok spokesperson said that the company would “work to defend the rights of our users” in all regions. Elon Musk gives his verdict on the existence of aliens
Elon Musk has shared his thoughts on whether aliens really exist out there in the universe. The 52-year-old billionaire is CEO of SpaceX, which manufactures and launches rockets into space with the "goal of enabling people to live on other planets," and now he's given his take on whether there is life beyond Earth. Musk appeared via video link at the International Astronautical Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan on Thursday (October 5) where his ambition to launch his Starship spacecraft to Mars was discussed, along with what future endeavours into space will look like. While aliens were also mentioned, Musk said he has seen "no evidence" they exist. "People often ask me if I’ve seen any evidence of aliens and I unfortunately have seen no evidence of aliens yet," Musk said. "We are the aliens, as far as I can tell." He added: "And I think if anyone would know, it would probably be me, and I’ve not seen any evidence of aliens. "So, what that perhaps suggests is that this tiny candle of consciousness that is humanity is all that exists in a vast darkness, and we should do everything we can to ensure that the candle does not go out." It's not the first time Musk has discussed this topic as he shared a similar opinion during an interview in April with with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. However, he added that if knew aliens were real he would tweet this information out to the world. "I'm, you know, very familiar with space stuff," he said. "I’ve seen no evidence of aliens. I would immediately tweet it out. "That’d be probably the top tweet of all time. 'We found one, guys!' It's the jackpot with some 8billion likes." Definitely worth keeping an eye on Musk's tweets then, you know, just in case... Meanwhile, the business magnate has claimed he is in fact an alien himself. "I keep telling people I’m an alien, but no one believes me," Musk recently tweeted. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy.
