Many of Twitter’s users are looking to move on in the wake of the site’s latest chaos. In recent days, Elon Musk has announced that his site will apply “rate limits” in an attempt to stop data scraping on the site, by automated tools including those used to train AI systems. But in effect that has meant that Twitter has stopped working properly for many of the people who rely on it. After the latest backlash, some of those users are looking to leave the site entirely, and move instead to other alternatives. As they do, they might wish to delete their account to avoid leaving data and posts up online after they leave. But deleting Twitter is not as easy as you might think. The first step is for a user to deactivate their Twitter account, which starts a process during which the user can decide if they actually want to go through with it. When a user deactivates their Twitter account it is no longer visible on Twitter, but if a log-in is carried out during a specified reactivation period then the account remains useable. Once the reactivation period is over then another Twitter user will be able to utilise the username. Metallica has stepped in with a big compliment for a woman posting bagpipe covers of the band’s songs on Instagram, after she was criticised by fans online. New Yorker Ally Crowley-Duncan, known online as Piper Ally, has nearly 330,000 followers on the social media app, where she posts videos of her playing the instrument. On 20 June, Crowley-Duncan uploaded a video showcasing “Five Metallica songs you didn’t know you could bagpipe.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter “Metallica and bagpipes is *chefs kiss*,” she wrote, with covers of some of the band’s biggest hits including Master of Puppets, Fade to Black, One, Enter Sandman, and Whiskey in the Jar. One Instagram user was unimpressed. “Bagpipes don’t belong in Metallica!!,” they wrote. “James [Hetfield, the lead singer] would not approve.” However, within minutes, Metallica intervened, saying: “@Ally the Piper. This guy doesn’t speak on our behalf. You’re awesome.” In a separate post, Crowley-Duncan shared the comment. She said: “When Metallica defends you in the comments of your own video.” Other users were quick to leap to her defence. One person said: “Could not have [a] bigger compliment.” Another said: “This is LEGENDARY.” Before long, the critic had deleted their comment, and later their own Instagram account. Despite Reese herself arguing for young Al Pacino to take the crown, not everyone was as convinced. Someone argued: “LOVE LOVE PACINO DOWN! But Mr. Bobby D eats him up EVERY TIME. He’s actively doing it right here.” Another urged: “The only right answer.” “This is the best a man has looked,” one Twitter user wrote of young De Niro. Others, however, vehemently agreed with the OP. One person wrote: “This is the correct answer, are half of you having some kind of episode, what on Earth.” “I’m sorry but all you saying De Niro are out of your actual minds, look at this gorgeous man,” someone else argued. Another wrote: “70s Al Pacino was one of the most beautiful people to ever exist on this earth.” In the end, the two acting legends could not be separated as the poll ended with a 50/50 percentage split of the votes.
